Lake Peten Itza

Postby rodald » Fri Dec 30, 2011 9:49 pm

I just arrived a couple hours ago and i just want to share some pics with you
the color of the lake is not as you have seen it before because of the weather, since its a little rainy the water doesnt reflect the blue of the sky

Today was a realy tired day because of the 8 hours of driving but still i was able to see a couple cichlids the first ones were a bunch of Thorichthys maybe Meeki swiming close to the shore, the other one was a 10"+ Petenia Splendida but that one was on a plate

tomorrow i will try to catch something hopeing for a V Melanura, i would rather to cath them as fryes but its to dificult to get near to the fish and net them, any advice on that?

The Thorichthys specis you seen is almost certain Thorichthys affinis and not meeki!
Dont you have any underwatter shots?

I have to start saying that my fishingrod skills suck  fish were just getting away with bait and never bit the hook. Fortunately Im better with the net, I have to say that i did saw a lot of diferent cichlids, i saw T. Affinis ( i agree not Meeki, took a closer look), P. Splendida, C. Urophthalmus and V. Melanura.
At the end i was only able to catch 3 fish, all of them C Urophthalmus, I wanted to catch V Melanura but they were to fast and didnt had that much time because it was raining and the lack of sunlight didnt allowed me to see what was underwater.

Here are a couple pics of the fish sorry for dirty glass and quality but i had to take them with my cellphone, i will download more from my camera and will post them later.

By the way i just want to make sure i have ID them right as Uros

when i was there i caught uro's, melanurus, bocourti and spendida on hook and line, using tiny jigs and maggots, the best bait i've used in central america.......unfortunately didn't catch many fish small enough, brought back some melanurus caught those with a handnet from a pair, in oct there were many pairs with fry...
