Nice pictures, again!

My guess on the mudfloor-fish is Limnochromis. It has some horizontal stripes, the T. otostigma has vertical ones.

There are 2 fishes and 2 species in that pic

the one sitting on the mud with the bright white fins is a Triglachromis.

the one swimming with clear fins and 2 horizontal stripes is something else
it has an underslung mouth, so I kinda lean towards some Ectodine sort of.
Triglachromis has an upturned mouth.

Hi all

Has someone any idea about how can we recreate the mudfloor habitat without cylinders or similar objects?
I explain: to make a mixe with sand and another compound that recreate mud-sustrate.

hy, I only found this thread just now,

really amazing pictures Evert, I also did some dives down to these fish but I dint have the camera then ... damn!
I know I'm to late but there was disscusion on the first page about the putative Greenwoodochroomis sp.
I think its Limnochromis staneri, Greenwoodochromis sp. have 6 body bars while Limnochromis have only 5.
I'll just ad some pictures of all the limnochromines that I have got my hands and eyes on so far. I always think direct comparison helps a lot to get a feeling for the different species.
G. bellcrossi and B. centropomoides are still missing...

Anyway awsome pictures right from another world..... I like a lot!

Yes, the fish in question Limnochromis staneri.

Funny to see all those dead fish, all of them are swimming in my tanks right know (accept T. otostigma)

yeah due to scientific work, I probably have a very different access to the fish then most people here, at least in terms of Lake Tanganyika. (As for example, up to now I have not seen all of the species above alive )
I much pefer to see them alive and in their respective habitat (as for which I really like this thread!) Having the possibility to examine and compare dead specimens always helps a lot to get to fully know the species though!
(These fish were all bought either directly of fishermen or at the fish market in Mpulungu btw)

Yes, of course examinations of freshly caught specimens is fruitful - I just got a minor shock when seeing the photos, as this would be my worst nightmare in the fishroom

about the B. centropomoides, I'll be at the lake for 3 month this summer . I hope I'll be able to satisfy mine, your and everybody elses curiosity on this elusive species...

@Javi: Have you considered getting real mud from a freshwater lake? I know I did that once as a kid and it worked quite well...

On the two species on the mud floor: I zoomed the picture a bit and I think it's a Trematocara sp. passing by the T. otostigma

unfortunaly I have not managed to find Bailychromis centropomoides in the lake....
Luckely some Fisherman was and so we found this individual on the fish market of Mpulungu!
Clearly B. centropomoides.... a crazy fish!

I`ll be back there in September and try again!

Might you be able to photograph and post additional interesting species at the fish market in Mpulungu in the weeks to come?? I am thinking of Plecodus elaviae and misc. Trematocara not yet exported, or even completely unidentifiable species?

Thanks Adrian, nice photos! The last Trematocara looks like unimaculatum, while the first one looks the same, except that it has two spots, possibly a natural variation in this species or a difference between the sexes?
