Furu Fanatic Update

Postby Greg Steeves » Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:17 pm

For you Lake Victoria cichlid fans, there are some new genera reviews of Pundamilia, Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis.

We are fortunate to have fantastic photography of very rare species included courtesy of Mark Smith.

The next few days will see the addition of species articles that all are certain to enjoy.

We have added revelant articles by Paul Loiselle, Lee Newman, Mary Bailey and Ron Coleman.

If you have any suggestions for this section, feel free to let me know.

Today we have added an article on Harpagochromis sp. "orange rock hunter". This rare Victorian cichlid is visited by Christophe de Medeiros. I would like to thank Chris for his fantastic contribution.

It seems that there are 2 kinds of fish sold as "orange rock hunter".
Are they the same species ? I'm not sure at all.

Here are pics of these 2 forms :

I don't know enough about the species to make that judgment (it is very rare or non-existent in North America). Many of the piscivores as I'm sure you know, display differing body structure with age. The premaxillary in particular develops fully in accordance with age in many of the Harpagochromis and Prognathochromis species. Could this be the case with the "orange rock hunters"? I don't know.

Perhaps others could relate their experiences and observations as well.

Thank you for your comments Phillippe. I hope it stimulates educational polite conversation.

Hi there is only one form of H.sp"orange rock hunter" that came from Gabalema island. I visisted the leiden university aquariums and the haplochromis showed on the seconds P.Burnel pics aren't from this place. The fishes I saw there was identical at 100% with the R;Paul specimens. The pic that shows the second form is in fact an hybrid between H.sp'orange rock hunter" and H.sp"silver stilletto" that was made in a french hobbyist aquarium that kept the 2 species together
Xris. :)

Hi phillipe
The ORH I saw at leiden wasn't the fishes labelled as so on yur second series of pix , they were exactly identicals to the ORH from R.Paul. May I ask you who identified them as orh? because it's almost impossible that this form came from raised specimens of leiden. I didn't saw this form in their aquariums.
xris :)
