I do not really know what species this is. It is certainly something I have not seen. It would be interesting to see how big they get.

I think they are either G. abalios or one of the undescribed g.aff altifrons . G.sp tapajos 2 has now been described as G. megasema but i do not think you have these as the black central spot is not large enough. They are looking very nice now growing and colouring up well

About 2.5 years ago i got 4 Geophagus Altifrons cf "tapajos" they sure dont look anything like my breeding pair of Altifrons.

like your fish the my "Tapajos" show a lot more blue on their fins than what an altifrons show. when they were juvies they all looked like the regular altifrons but after they started to grow even more the pattern in the tail started to form stripes with 1 Expetion in 1 of the 4 specimes. (he shows the same Blue coloration but resembles the markings of an Altifrons)

Image
Noticed the stripe on the piece of tail you can observe, the Blue was wash off by the flash.

Thanks,
They look pretty similar indeed. So funny thing is, on the another forum someone's shown the same species, but named as mine was (G. aff. alitofrons Alenquer). Those trade names... :?

Here is pic of GvO's fish:

They look pretty much the same, but they are older and much more colorful. I think I need some several months to wait for their first spawn :D

It's a gorgeous fish regardless!
$200 is a lot of money for such a plain brown fish. It must be really rare. I'll take 4!!

Really? I was under the impression that G. megasema had a much larger spot than what G. sp. "Tapajos II" exhibits.

About 6 years ago I imported a group of wild caught Tapajos Red Heads. Out of 8 fish, 2 were different and ended up being Tapajos II. They looked nothing like the pictures of megasema below.

Now compared to "Tapajos II"

Hmmm... this is the only pic of Tapajos II I can find. Sadly, I never took any pictures of mine.

In addition, megasema comes from the Rio Guapore river basin which is about 1000 miles from where Tapajos II is collected.

Your Geophagus is looking very nice there.

Mine keeps Digging and showing breeding behavior but they haven't done it :? While my Altifrons do it every month in there they show less activity than this guys.

They are definitely not g.argyrostictus . May be easier to get a positive ID when they have settled in and coloured up a bit

In the area where G sp orangehead is found, more Geophagus are found:

G altifrons - definitely not your fish - the lateral spot is too large on your fish
G proximus - with a very large, square lateral spot
G sp cf altifrons Rio Tapajos - smaller than altifrons, with a lateral spot

but also the Rio Maicuru might be taken into consideration. This river, coming from the north, ~100 km east of Santarem, has its own population of a G cf altifrons. Thomas Wiedner refers to this population as G sp Rio Maicuru in his book, ajnd one day, quite a while ago, I got a group of Geophagus looking mostly like this (and not G sp cf altifrons Rio Tapajos) found among G sp orangehead

So that is what I think your fishes are

So Bas,
my fish might be sp. aff. altifrons "Maicuru", too?

Evening everyone.

I just want to say: I do not recommend mixing Hyphessobrycon with Geophagus in one tank anymore. Two of my lemon tetras have been eaten, one has jumped out. :? I got them out quickly to a 12Ltr. tank, they are going to LFS tomorrow.

Anyway, I've got no luck with more-than-one-species tanks

I had some problems when I first got Geophagus - tetras were very nervous, some (3 or 4) has jumped out. However, after I've covered tank more precisely - no problems since then occured. And after 6 months - they (Geos) were hunting for lemons like a wolfs' herd. Crazy.
