Fishing Trip + ID

Postby rodald » Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:39 pm

Hi everyone, this sunday i went on a fishing trip to the pacific coast of Guatemala and this is what i found:
it apears that there was a fish explotion  because of the floodings caused by the severe wheather, it made the rivers overflown and it apears that the fish went crazy spawning, i pulled over by the side of the highway where there were some fisherman fishing with casting nets, i got out of the car and theres where i realized the amount of fish there were in the river, im going to try to upload a short video taken with my cellphone, the sad part is that i think that most of this fish were snake head frys, at least they looked like them, i took some pictures with my cellphone but because of the sunlight i couldnt focus and i took some realy bad pictures thats why i dont include them in this post. i asked the fishermen what they where fishing and he answered pupos and mojarras (in english sort of tadpoles and tilapias), he threw the casting net again and he catched over 50 fish realy easy and he took them to the land where i was, i asked him if i could take some that i was from a college and that i was doing a study  , he agreed and he started to give me several fish, he gave me arround 10, one of them was one of the ones that i think were snakehead, all the others where cichlids :D, i started looking at them and immediatly i recognized a really beautifull A. Trimaculatum wich i put aside, then i saw this tiny fish with a red line in the caudal fin and a red belly, at first i thougt it was a T. Meeki, but i think there are no Meekis in Guatemala´s pacific, so can you please tell me what kind of fish its this please, i attach fotos of the other fish i was able to get, i was able to identify only the trimaculatum, again im realy sorry for the bad quality of the photos and i will try to upload the video for you to see all those fish in the river.

A. trimaculatum already on my fish tank

This is the fish i need ID please

This fish looks to me to a Astatheros longimanus.
The fish on the last picture looks more like a tilapia or something.
Greetings Michael.

I agree with Michael @ A longimanus

The other fish? I have no clue, I'm quite certain it's an african fish - thus introduced :(

This one is a halfgrown Astatheros macracanthus. The African on the last two pics is most likely a young Oreochromis mossambicus judging from the body markings.

However, your most remarkable finding is A. longimanus to me. This species is well known from Honduras and Nicaragua, but the only previous report of its occurence in Guatemala I am aware is the classic work of Bussing & Martin (1975): "Systematic status, variation and distribution of four Middle American cichlid fishes belonging to the Amphilophus species group, genus Cichlasoma." Thanks for sharing this!

Hi again, today i went fishing again to the same place, this time since the rain has stoped the river its drying as you can see on the photografy :( it means that all the fish overthere are going to die because it was a temporal river, i tried to catch all the fish i could but at the end i was able to catch only one cichlid, all the others were catfish, and i also caught a fresh water shrimp that unfortunatly ended up in my Oscars belly , my mother had named her Maribel   , i was able to saw some schools of A. Macracanthus as the one in the photo but i wasnt able to see any A. Trimaculatum or A. Longimanus anymore.
Here are the photos, can you please ID the fish i caught, in my opinion it looks like P. Managuensis, sadly introduced too :?

Here its the river as you can see it has started to dry :(

Provided you are on the Pacific slope, the shrimp seems to be Macrobrachium tenellum.

just as i tought it is a P Managuensis, probably i will have to return it to the river because of the size and the agresivity of this fish, the shrimp i really dont have any idea of the species it was but the male had pincers one bigger than the other

In Peten, it will be a different but similar species of shrimp, M. acanthurus....

Oh... I'm sorry... I always get sidetracked when there's talk about nice prawns. You should be able to get shrimp in the rivers (several species in your area). Baited traps at night do the trick.
Cheers, m
