Books on Lake Victoria Basin

Postby sic_4_vics » Mon Apr 19, 2010 2:04 pm

Can anyone lead me to the best Lake Victoria species book(s)? The only one I have is the Barron one Lake Victoria basin Cichlids.
Is there a book out there for this lake just like AD has on Malawi?

There are two other books that I can think of on the top of my head.

I'll post this in a few posts, since only one link is allowed per post.

1) Lake Victoria Rock Cichlids - taxonomy, ecology, and distribution
Ole Seehausen
Verduyn Cichlids 1996

Darwin's Dreampond: Drama in Lake Victoria
Tijs Goldschmidt (translated by Sherry Marx-Macdonald)
MIT Press 1998

(This is more of a story than specifically on care of Viccie cichlids)

Here's another old one I found, but it's small and is most likely way out of date.

I was cleaning house the other day, and sorting thru some books that have been donated for the Babes In The Cichlid Hobby's annual Silent Auction and I came a cross a book that I certainly missed the first time I went thru them. I would be interested if anyone could tell me about this book? I am thinking it may be worth something?

The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Victoria, East Africa: The biology and Evolution of a Species Flock by P. H. Greenwood, Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History) Zoology, Supplement 6, London: 1974

I knew that Greenwood had a book that was published like in the late 40's, but I didn't think there had been anything after that?
This book is paperback, has a couple of fold out charts, and lots of Victorian Cichlid line drawings.

If you go to the ACA convention this year, as well as bidding on Greenwood's book in the B.I.T.C.H. auction, I have heard there should be a new book (on Victorian fishes) that will be launched there.

HI

Anton lamboj has a brand new book about Haplochrominae, including Victoria basin species, that must be by now fresh out of print. We still had the hope here in Portugal that he would bring some to APC´s convention in 1 and 2 of May but the book had not yet been printed. We did see some images of it, it doesn´t have all the species according to what Lamboj told me but it´s going to be interesting for sure.

Actually the author credits will be shared between Anton, Greg Steeves, and Dave Hanson. It will be part of a series.
