Sexing Geophagus 'Tapajos orange head'

Postby Amazonfish » Fri Apr 09, 2010 8:49 pm

Hello,

I have 6 Geophagus 'Tapajos orange head', but I have a sneaking suspicion that they're all males. Can anyone give any tips on how to sex them? For some motivation, here are some pictures of them (and one of my favorite S. leucosticta)! They're a little over a year old, and all around 4.5". Thanks in advance :D

Between those pics, I think I've covered all 6 orange heads, but definitely atleast 5 of them. If you can't help out, I hope you enjoy the pics anyway. Thanks!

Hi, when i look to your pics i can't say what's male or female. I know that sexing and determinate Geophagus species is quit difficult...
Your foto's are a bit unsharp for good sexing i guess. Maybe it is possible to make a picture from the whole group of Geopgahus?
I think it is a lot easier then. But i have to say the Tapajos orange head is a very nice Geophagus species. 8)

Perhaps a vet will know. The photos are great but I guess there's no finding out if they are male or female or what.

with this species - as with most geophagus - sexing is looking at details.

Who chases who? Most often both are males, especially if others are ignored. Females are mostly less brightly colored, shorter and often with shorter fins

But in some cases you can be surprised by finding two 'males' digging a pit, or even having fry. Sometimes there is just no telling

 If you can imagine, that happened to me with a 'male' red severum laying eggs

I've been watching the orange heads' behavior, but they all bicker equally. There are a couple that I think are clearly males, but the rest have yet to be determined. I will keep observing, and hopefully I will one be greeted with a nice surprise :D That's the day I'm waiting for!

I've had it with Wieja coatzalcos - and those are supposed to be sexable :) Females have black bloches in the dorsal, males don't
