Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Breeding Project

Postby Sprungster » Sun Mar 07, 2010 3:02 pm

Hi,

I have been working towards breeding EBJD for nearly a year now.

A few days ago I had my first spawn, an EBJD female X Blue Gene male.

I hope you will enjoy the videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPwYogh6MOM - EBJD Female spawn with a Blue Gene Male. The male was born 5 months ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3exjMD_Iiw - My EBJD male with a Blue Gene female...they haven't spawnd yet, the female is 5 months old. The male is around 1 year old.

Seems like it does not have enough top-lip to cover the teeth. Many EBJD's are deformed. The genetics are very weak, so I wonder if it is a good thing to keep producing them. Is there any way to strengthen their genetics?

They are weak and slow growing. From my understanding they were a hybrid (dempsey x carpintis). Was they ever validated?

The top lip does look weird. Always wondered how these fish came about.

The top lip was ripped by a mature JD female while they were lip-locking. She was too big for him and so I had to set her up with a regular JD in order to produce a smaller/younger female for the EBJD in order to product the Blue-Gene ones.

They are not hybrids as far as I know, you can easily google it but here is one discussion regarding this issue:

http://bluejax.14.forumer.com/viewtopic ... &start=165

I am trying to improve the blood-line by mixing them with strong regular JD's. I carefully picked the strongest/most aggressive/fastest growing females and set them up with the EBJD. From that spawn I again carefully selected the best males/females. I hope that the EBJD that I will produce will indeed be stronger than my original EBJDs.

Here are some photos of my regular JD male, the father of the female that I have used in order to create the Blue Gene fish:

The pair is in a 200L tank. Soon to be moved to a 460L tank with some large tetras.

The EBJD male that you see in these photos is about 1 year old and measures around 17cm...that's not really slow growing. The only problem is getting a healthy one. From my experience, these guys either grow normally or don't grow at all.

Well done for trying to strengthen them. It is badly needed, if it's possible. Best of luck. :D

very nice!

I used to be crazy for these guys, but I was one of those that did not have a strong line. Even though I did cross lines, mine did not turn out as strong. Currently, I sold every pair and EBJD I bred and kept one BG breeding pair that I have not bred for a year. Good luck! I am looking forward to stronger EBJD's.

Well, it has been a while. I now got back to my fish after a short break from breeding.

Here is my current spawn of EBJD, 1 month old:
