Acquired a group of 5 from Ken Davis a few weeks ago and loving them The dominant male has spawned with two females but I have yet to see any wigglers....still hopeful tho.

Not sure what species they are - doesn't look like any described species... Probably closet to a group of G. stergiosi that I kept and bred before, but these are significantly larger with a distinct head shape.

I don't think I've ever seen the lateral spot on the dominant male. The females do show it sometimes, but rarely.

Is that red spot on his face in the last shot part of the normal coloration or just a bruise? I know there is still an undescribed orange cheek Guianacara thought to be closely related to stergiosi ... but I don't have any info on them.

Thanks Chris. It's just a bruise...they don't look like the orange cheek guys.

Does Ken know where they came from? Are they wild or tank raised? Did the parents show a lateral blotch? What shape? What shape is the lateral blotch on the females when it shows? Pics of them?

Thanks Dean. Ken did tell me who he got these from but I can't remember They are wild caught, and Ken refers to them as "Caroni". He has had them for a while and showed them at the 2008 ACA.

Here are a couple of pics of a female showing the lateral blotch. Not a round spot below the mid lateral line like G. stergiosi, but doesn't look like a bar either.



Here is my G. stergiosi for comparison...Very different fish.

I got them 3 years ago as wild young adults G. sp Rio Caroni, I have never seen any fish like these before or since. They spawned for me, but I never got fry so I gave them to Peter to see if he would have better luck. Ken

Excellent, I have at least 100 or more at 1/4" now, starting to get tall, Peter has lost 3 of the adults and is down to a pair. I plan to keep 20-30 to grow out and sell the rest to selected epople who will raise them, pretty sure this is a new species, they may be the only ones in captivity. Ken

I lost them one by one over a few months...not sure why

The good news is that their progeny are doing well. I kept 7 (3m/4f). They are just over a year old and the dominant pair have spawned once. I didn't save the fry, but hopefully they will do it again soon

I've been paying close attention to the lateral spot as they develop, as it was missing from the parents. One of the young female already lost it. The rest still have it but it seems to be getting smaller and lighter in color. I suppose it's an age thing.
