Tropheus ID

Postby L1zakZiz » Mon Dec 07, 2009 2:07 pm

The fish are sold as Tropheus Brichardi Namansi reef II. They were imported as WC and buyed in France in 2004year.
They are very colorfull and its not the light cuz the pics are 3-4 years old and my friend didnt used any special light for that.

The dark striping on the sides are similar to the namansi but looking at the coloration they are closer to the chaitika. There are very few Tropheus with a blue dorsal fin. Most have a red dorsal, some a yellow dorsal this intense blue I have only seen in Chaitikas. I have never seen Tropheus colored like this.

Aqualog book has Namansi I Population 8.20 a Sp. Red variant (not brichardi). And yep some seem to show blue and red in the dorsal with the blue eye but the photos there are far less full of colour than yours. What super Tropheus, I hope they are a wild type (not selected for extra colour) I really like them. I have never seen any in the flesh so anything I say is only from books.

No, included in the "true moorii" lineage (lineage 8) in aqualog.

Tropheus sp red is lineage 7 (but not sure at all for population 7.12 to 7.14 (from ilangi to Nangu) wich are, in my point of view, T. moorii

The last two pics make me think, possibly Lufubu?

Arrg yes sorry for the mistake. Yep a Rainbow type (8) not Sp Red (7)

(Assuming you go along with the thinking that these are significantly different)

I take it we have all seen this.
http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/7/137
Helps show the types and some evidence for and against these lineages being considered as species.
As long as you do not get it mixed up all the time like me. :)

"So far, six nominal species have been described based on morphological characters (T. moorii BOULENGER, 1898; T. annectens BOULENGER, 1900; T. duboisi MARLIER, 1959; T. brichardi NELISSEN and THYS VAN DEN AUDENAERDE, 1975; T. kasabae NELISSEN, 1977 and T. polli AXELROD, 1977; [26]). However, there are no scientific data on the distribution of the species around the lake, and many Tropheus populations from different regions of the lake cannot be unequivocally identified to species"

If there is any more recent work please let me know.
Still waiting for someone qualified to make sense of the conflicting data and separate em out into species that everyone will accept as such.
Oh AFLP is Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism PCR (or AFLP-PCR or just AFLP) is a PCR-based tool used in genetics research.
AFLP groups are just that Tropheus with similar genetic make ups (?species)
Not much support for a simple division of Tropheus moorii into Tropheus sp. Rainbow/moorii and Tropheus sp."Red" wherever you choose to draw a line I think.
(Though good evidence that sp."Black" are different enough from moorii to be a separate species I think)
So we can think of sp."Red" as moorii again anyway?

Any updates with these fish and what they should be called?

They look really nice by the way.

Did anyone get anywhere pinning down which species these are? I ask because I've just got a wild caught group of Tropheus that came to the UK from collection point Namansi which look to be the same as those in the photos
