Julidochromis transcriptus "Gombe" ID confirmation

Postby Colby Dixon » Wed Jul 29, 2009 8:14 pm

Hey folks,

The Cichlidbase project needs your help! While Alex Calder is working on version 3.0 (Blog) we are attempting to positively ID and validate suspected ID's of many of our Cichlid photographs. Juan has graciously agreed to let us use this Forum's Expertise in verifying our photos. Any and all help is appreciated. All photos by Alex Calder.

Thank You,
Colby Dixon and the entire Cichlidbase team.

This fish was labeled as Julidochromis transcriptus "Gombe"

Whether the Julidochromis from Gombe is a J. transcriptus, J. marlieri or an undescribed species is not certain. It's usually referred to as a J. transcriptus in the trade, Konings regards it as a variant of J. marlieri, and personally I tend to think of it as a potentially undescribed species, J. sp. "Gombe", as I think it really does not seem to fit well within the two described taxa. So, it's matter of personal opinion, but I would be very cautious assigning it to J. transcriptus.

Thomas,

I would sooner avoid using it if there is that much confusion. Th software would allow me to label it Julidochromis sp. "Gombe" with two synonyms. aliases J. transcriptus Gombe and J. marlieri Gombe, however that might just end
up being too confusing and not all that helpful.
