Tropheus Mbuna Mix

Postby chris murphy » Tue Jul 21, 2009 7:15 am

I am dismantling my fish room at the moment, and as a result of equipment and tanks being sold in sporadic fashion I am left with a mixture of Tropheus and Mbuna, and one tank.

10 Duboisi
15 Moliro
10 Bulu Point

5 Cyr. Moorii
5 M. Caillanos
5 L. Caeruleas
5 O. Lithobates Z Rock
15 S. Multipunctatus
3 P. Msobo
3 P Saulosi

I have a 775 litre 7 x 2 x 2 tank currently holding the Malawi fish, and I intend (not by choice) on adding the tropheus into this setup. It is well filtered, about 10,000 litres turnover per hour. I have 3 separate rock piles. I would consider myself a fairly accomplished fishkeeper, as I have kept and bred tropheus (in species tanks) for over 5 years now,but this is something completely new for me. Hence the reason I am seeking advice of experts, on mixing these two groups. All fish are adult and the period of time may be indefinite?

Any experiences or expert opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Chris.

They will be fine, even though i don't like mixing them up. Just use good food and don't overfeed, you shouldn't have any problems.

Thank you Marius.
I have concerns for the Cyrtocara Moorii but they can easily be re-housed to a friends house.

I realise I will have to satisfy the tropheus dietary needs. I currently feed New Life Spectrum cichid formula, OSI Spirulina Flake and Pellets, Kens Fish spirulina soft and moist and Kens Fish garlic bites. I realise this is not ideal for some of the Malawi cichlids as they would like a bit more protein but all should do well I hope.

I will post updates when I add the tropheus.

I put the Bulu Point tropheus in first. They are happy in their new tank. They all have eaten and 2 females are holding after 3 hours.

I am selling the Moliro and a friend is going to hold onto the Duboisi. I think the tank would be too overstocked with three species of tropheus.
