Geophagus surinamensis

Postby Marko Lenac » Thu Jun 04, 2009 3:39 pm

HI all!

I got some Geos labeled surinamensis. The exporter said to me they are from Rio Ventuari. does someone know what species of Geo live in it?

Thank you

Geophagus abalios, G. dicrozoster, G. gottwaldi, G. grammepareius, G. taeniopareius, G. winemilleri are the Geo's I found listed for Venezuela ... but I couldn't find more specific information for the Rio Ventuari other than G. abalios and G. taeniopareius are both found for sure in your river.

I wouldnt try to ID a fish without a picture.

But almost all of fish that I have seen labelled as Surinamensis this year are Geophagus Dicrozoster

Well I googled Rio Ventuari and from what I could tell from a bad map, the river is in Venezuela. Then I looked on the catalogue of geophagus here on CRC and it said only abalios, dicrozoster, gottwaldi, grammepareius, and taeniopareius are found in Venezuela. Dicrozoster and taeniopareius can be eliminated due to pre-opicular bar. Sadly grammepareius doesn't have any available photos or descriptions. Gottwaldi only has a drawing of it, but it does say it has a infraorbital strip, but not quite sure what that means. It could be an abalios however the caudal pattern is messing me up. Abalios has a striped caudal pattern, correct? And the one in the second photos looks to have a spotted one. Well I hope this helps some!

Looks like Geophagus surinamensis to me though I'm no expert. Could be that the seller was mistakin about the collection point. 8)
