In stocklist they were called G. winemilleri. What you think. Ill add better pictures as they've settled down a bit.

Obliques verticals bands match well with Geophagus winemilleri, but I can find 5 of them and not 4. So they could be the closely related Geophagus sp Guyana / Rio Branco. Just wait and see ;)

Be careful to hole in the head disease

feeding enough plant based food should take care of hole in the head

Contrarily to whan many people think, life food, or frozen food, is not the best food for all fishes, only for plankton eaters and/or predators. Geophagus eat the eatable things among the sand - thus a lot of algae, some small animals and perhaps some remains of plants and larger animals

Their food does, in other words, contain a lot of veggie material, and veggie material contains much more minerals and vitamin B and C than animals do

A good quality of flakes, or granulate, contains much more vitamins and minerals than frozen dead animals do - especially in those cases where the carcasses are frozen more than, say 6 months back

I say impossible to give ID of such a small fish, especially without exact catch location.

post pics of them in 6 weeks time, I have an idea what they are, but will reserve judgement for now.

I give my geo's spirulina 4-5 times a week. I believe spirulina contains a lot of essential vitamines.
I also bought "Protovit", vitamineconcentrate for men, i use it on the flakes.

I look forward to see these Geo's in 6 weeks...

I agree very difficult to tell at such a small size without knowing the collection locale.

Gives you good motivation to grow them up!!! That S. acuticeps looks very healthy too.

Any thoughts? Winemilleri, abalios or something else?

I think we can rule out Winemilleri since it is missing the straightish black streak on it's cheek.

abalios is a dicrozoster without the mark

Geophagus abalios is not Y banded, at least not like Geophagus dicrozoster. The anterior three bars (of 6 total) are medially bisected, and appear as paired bars. I would think this is only apparent in adult fish, not juveniles, inwhich they likely look solid. G. dicrozoster has 7 bars.

The original description can be read here (page 14-22)
http://txspace.tamu.edu/bitstream/handl ... sequence=1
The bars are discussed on page 15 under diagnosis, and there is a nice drawning on page 13 that shows the bisected transversal bars (abalios is figure b.).

G. dicrozoster is also in the same document, page 24-31 and is also drawn on page 13 and is figure a. (only the mid-lateral band forms the "Y" as it transects the abdominal spot.

G. winemilleri is page 32-37 and is figure c. on page 13.

Hope that helps,
Ed

In this article T. Weidner shows abalios in the second last picture.
The fish below shows a y-band on the lateral spot.

I just love to do things more difficult. Now those geos have got that black dot in their cheek, atleast one of them has it.
