Currently I have 8 moorii nkonde yellow, 8 ikola and 10 red moliro.

How long have you had them together?

Aren't you worried that they will hybridize?

As I understand it they shouldn't as long as there are males and females of each type. Maybe someone else can add more?

Sorry to disagree, they do cross (sometimes) even with good numbers of both males and females of both types, in even big tanks. In tanks the dom male of another type can and does (sometimes) push his way in despite the females efforts to breed with only her type. Prob not seen in the wild but common in tanks.
Photographic evidence needed?


I know this is not what is regularly reported (and contradicts the Aqualog book on Tropheus (usually very reliable)) but I have seen it often.

My thanks to the photo taker for giving the evidence I have been looking to show folk for years.

James, I coulden't agree more. Tropheus will definitely interbreed under certain cercumstances.

Thank you all for your feedback.

The nkonde and the moliros are together for a month now and the ikola are only there for a couple of weeks now. I had the moliros together with some kirizas and they didn´t crossbreed at all. The nkonde will porobably leave in a couple of days (they will join another 8 WC ones). The ikola will also be leaving once I found them very agressiv towards all tankmates.

I also have a WC colony of chaitikas and I´m planning to keep just this specie along with the moliros...

Hi,

Today I took out the nkonde and had some more chaitika to the colony - they are 20 now.
Now I have 20 moorii "chaitika" blue, 10 red moliro and 8 ikolas...

Meanwile the fights in the aquarium continues. The dominant male of moliro after establish is dominance on their own tried to pull way the male chaitika...











And the winner is...

The fights went on for a while but in the end the moliros got the cup!
Nevertheless the chaitikas are fine but with a little less color...



The moliros are better (here´s a pic of one of the males - not the dominant)...



The ikolas just pass by!

Thanks for sharing, great shot. Obviously my reading material and others "theories" were wrong! It's the same as my reports of male Cyphotilapia gibberosa brooding eggs and my subsequent photographic proof!

Hi,

Now that the aquarium only have chaitikas some new ones came from Cichlidenstadl and Verduijn (all Wild Caught). The 5 from Verduijn only 3 are alive and all 6 females from Cichlidenstadl are fine.

The only male that came is the bigger fish in the tank and allready trying some dominance...







The 8 new females are fine but yet with no color...





The dominant male are allways fight and still is the owner of the left part of the tank...
