shelters/caves in aquarium?

Postby cft » Wed Dec 31, 2008 7:24 am

Hi all
I am quite new to Malawi Ciclids (had them for one year now) and just finished setting up a second tank of 250l (first was 120l). I moved all the large fish to the new tank and added new young fish to the old tank. My question - I built some "caves" from some slate tiles glued together to form six caves (+- 75mm deep and 30*50mm entrance), three at the bottom and three on top - hope you can picture this. What I found now is that in stead of 6 fishes having a home, only one of my Socoloffi's have taken all six and is defending it all the time. I am sure I made some mistake. Should individual caves/hiding places be constructed far from each other, or what is the right procedure? The set of "caves"are with its back against the one side of the tank.
Your input would be appreciated.
Regards

Just add more "caves" or hiding places to the tank or remove the "condo" unit and replace all of them with random caves and hiding places. W.C. Fields once said, "Never work with children or animals." (because they never do what you want) :D
