hi all new member, question about my texas cichlid

Postby nason » Mon Dec 29, 2008 10:28 pm

hi all, I'm happy to be here, I just got a 55 gallon tank from a local, and kept all the fish(3 tex. cichlids and 2 firemouth cichlids, a 400 filter, and most of the things they were used to over to my house. My big cichlid has been terrorizing the smallest texas cichlid I have for some reason. He never used to when I got him from the previous owner. The small fish has turned purple and for a long time was swimming vertically at the top of the tank in order to try to hide from him, needless to say the big cichlid would go up there and attack him constantly. I got a divider since I saw the small fish was really getting messed up, but the big fish eventually knocked the side of it out. He has some power. I have added stress coat, and even rearranged the tank, the big fish has laid off some but still tries to chase the small one around, and pretty much everyone else in there, not so much on the little firemouths. The smallest texas is the weakest and that may have something to do with it. I have places he can hide but in his current condition he mostly hides in the rocks and by the filter. I am not sure what to do at this point, I dont want him to suffer any more abuse and I want to give him some time to heal. Any recommendations on how to help the small fish heal? Or will he heal over time while hiding?
Here is a pic of what the small one looks like now and a pic of the big fish!

You may have to remove either the bigger nastier one or the little one to a different tank. Sometimes some fish just do not get along. Since I've never kept Texas cichlids, I can't tell you for sure, but I also suspect that your tank will be overcrowded with the fish you have. Also keep an eye on the firemouths in with the Texas, since firemouths are all bluff and no real fight.
