Seb,

nice to meet you even here, on the other side of the ocean

Your informations are right, Longola is 70 Km South of Moba in South of the Congolese coast.

Check on E. Genevelle's web site ( http//:tanganyika.netliberte.org/index.html ) the article about O. ventralis of Congo (from Longola comes also a very nice Black/white and Yellow ventralis).

I have never kept Petrochromis sp. "Texas Red Fin" Ubwari but judging from the many photos I have seen, this Petrochromis and P. sp. "Texsas Red Fin" Longola look similar but the shape of their head and snout is rather different and thus maybe they shouldn't be included in the same species.

The Texas petro from Ubwari has a shorter snout, like P. polyodon from the South of the lake or P. sp. "Texas" Bulu Point, while the Texas petro from Longola has a more elongated snout which remind me that of P. machrognathus or, even more, that of P. sp. "Macrognathus Rainbow" from the Kipili area.

Obviously this is only an idea which should be confirmed checking the morphometric data of many specimens!

Here is a pic of the head P. sp. "Texas" Bulu Point

and this is a Longola Texas Petrochromis, judge by yourself

Hope to read from someone else!

Paulo

Thanks for the clarification. I was not sure as to the relationship between Longola and Ubwari. Based upon your excellent photos, it seems as though they are two distinct species.

The genus Petrochromis is a difficult group to sort out species-wise, partly due to the few specimens there are to work with, the few ichthyologists who study them, and their difficulty in being collected.

I've got both species, Ubwari and red fin Longola.
They are very very similar and i refuse myself to put both species in the same tank.
In my tanks, Ubwari and Longola are much more aggressive than the Kasumbe Halembe (electric blue), my Longola male has ever butchered one female and the only surviving one is always hidden in the rocks...Hard life for females !
