A shrimp from Tanganyika...

Let me introduce you our new friend, a little red shrimp which arrived a few weeks ago from the lake. They were several of them but apparently they killed each other until only one was left.

It looks like a Macrobrachium, is 5 cm long (excluding claws) and seems to eat all kinds of flake and pellet foods.

There is one Macrobrachium described, Macrobrachium moorei (sometimes called Palaemon moorei). It could be it, but how could we be sure about it ? Anyway, we are happy to see crustaceans from the lake arrive in France.

Wow that is neat to see. How safe is it with fish in the tank???

Hi Estelle,

How are you keeping the shrimp? I have seen a variety of shrimp from the lake offered here in the US and wondered how I would keep them. Is it a nocturnal creature or does it come out in the light? Do you hand feed or does it scavenge?

We have it in a 450 liters tank with Xenotilapia ornatipinnis, Xenotilapia papilio and Neolamprologus brevis. No problem with the fish, they ignore it and anyway the shrimp is completely nocturnal and very shy. We give it catfish tablets.

Sorry for the late. I was in Mexico for a fantastic shrimps/crabs/cichlids trip.
I think the only specie present in the lake is M. moorei.
Estelle: do you know the locality? Burundi?
