A new addition to my fish room. These fish were on my "wanted list" for a while.

Great shots of awesome fish! I have a group as well but I am not having much luck with them. I had 2 pairs form shortly after i bought them and both spawned. Since then, I've had nothing but bad luck. I started with 12 and I am down to 6. 4 males and 2 females. Of those, only 1 male is doing well. The others are very picky and will not eat much. They are surviving by picking at the algae in the tank. I have them spread over 3 tanks (2 different locations) so I don't think it's anything specific to my tank.

I had high hopes for these guys but I am failing them


EDIT: I notice you are from Ajax. I got mine from a fellow there. I wonder if ours came from the same place??

I got two pairs, but one female bloated soon after coming home. the pair that I have is spawning all the time but I never saw any fry. very stressing (for me)

I only have one adult pair and they came from Barry McKee here in Ajax. This pair has spawn several time for Barry. I know that he feeds his fish NLS with the occasional treat of frozen blood worms, brine shrimp and mysis. He mentioned to me to watch the water quality. According to him these fish are a bit sensitive in that area.

I keep mine in a 4 foot, 65g with three medium sized Geophagus Altifrons. After one day the female had staked out her corner and is chasing everybody else away (even though she is only halve the size). It's a lot of fun to watch her.

I've talked t Barry about my issues as well. No luck. Mine will not touch NLS.

I keep my tank well filtered with regular water changes. I was telling Barry I was doing about 40% weekly and he suggested backing it down to only 20%. I have but no change.

Very frustrating.

Hi Klaus!!!

I had no idea you where looking for this wonderful little cichlid!! I would have brought you some. I have been breeding them for a couple of years now, and they are so much fun! The colors are spectactular, and I can't wait to see your pictures when they are spawning!!! I tried to take pictures, but my pictures don't do this fish justice!!!

Right now I have 3 pairs and some odd ones out in a 52 gal tank that is like 5' long and 12 inches wide. The longer tank helps with the aggression issues. I am using congo tetras for dithers, I have about 24 in the tank. I have spread out some inverted flower pots with some spawning caves. My water is hard as rock, 8.5 pH, 76 F.

Hi Pam,

Well, I got this adult pair from a good friend of mine and hope to be able to spawn them. They sure are little terrors but I have to admit that they are absolutely gorgeous. It looks like I have to remove the much larger Altifrons because they have no chance in that tank. Your pictures sure show the awesome colors especially of the female.

I'm looking very much forward to your article (once Juan Miguel gets around to publish it )

I would say they are probably a little too aggressive/hyper for the altifrons. Many of my tanks are species only, but these guys will just trash each other, so I have found that dithers are a good way to go. They other key for me as been using caves, castles, flowerpots; they are more eager to spawn in an enclosure then out on the open on a rock.

I am fascinated with their coloration and the breeding dress is like nothing I have ever seen, just amazing. Have your sunglasses handy! Their other cool feature is their blue eyes, they are so bright. I am sure it is just a matter of time for you, before nature takes its course.

I just received 4 little ones (~1-1.5") from Jeff Rapps a couple of weeks ago.

So far they've been no problem at all to feed (eating flake, pellets, etc.)...in fact they'll eat too much if I let them. They're in a 2'x2'x1' tank with some goodeids.

I'm hoping to get a pair. At what size/age did yours start to pair / breed?

I would at around 12 months they are sexually mature, but I have even seen younger then that think they might want to spawn. They don't have to be full grown to spawn that is for sure.

Thanks Mac for the great picture and the video. It certainly shown how fearless they are.

Pam, having them in with the Altifrons was just a temporary arrangement. I am a fan of species only tanks too. They are now in a 65g by themselves and it sure changed their behavior. Especially the female is not as aggressive anymore. They now remind me of an old couple still very much in love.

One of my pairs is doing much better now and have started aggressively guarding a cave. The female is trying to entice the male but so far, he looks uninterested.

At what size/age did yours start to pair / breed?

I have one female from a March spawn that spawned herself late November.
