what are your thoughts on formed fibreglass style backgrounds (the type that you actually put in the tank and silicone in!)?

I like them a lot....... Very realistic. I do prefer, though, when they are not completely covering the back of the tank. Leaving a little view to the back (which can be dark blue to simulate murky depths), can make a tank seem more spacious and realistic.

I am very interested in finding a 3d type background like this that I could install in a tank, but have had *zero* luck finding anything like that, on line or LFS. Anything I have seen is a) huge and b) very expensive. Right now I am looking to set up a 20H tank. Any leads on such a background would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure you seal EVERY hole and crack when attaching your background if your fish breed you'll never get them all out of there! :D

Thanks Dan, good point. Somebody has to be making these things. My other thought was to get some of those flat, artificial rocks that are used as decorative siding on houses and glue a few of those to the back side of the aquarium. However, I am not sure exactly what material is used to make them, and what might leach into the water.

Way cool, but lightyears beyond my simple (i.e., virtually nonexistent) DIY skills. Any idea where I might be able to purchase something similar? Thanks again.

I did a search on the web for 'Aquarium Backgrounds'. This is one of the results.

Dan- Thanks. Your search engine must work better than mine. I think one of those might work.

Jurupari-That thing is huge! I understand what you are saying-some of the home made backgrounds look like they leave only a couple of inches of water between the BG and the front glass.

jurupari that is a very impressive background.
Do you have a building log somewhere with some more fotos?
if not, could you tell us a little more about how you built such a cool background?
thanx
