How many Astronotus species?

Postby Michael L. » Fri Nov 26, 2004 1:21 pm

Hello,

on a homepage from Japan I found some pictures with different Astronotus cichlids. Non of the fish ist titled as Astronotus ocellelatus but A. rubroocellatus, A. crassipinis and A. orbiculatus. Are these all valis names?

Regards

Michael

crassipinis and orbicularis are. I've never heard of the other one.

That is a pretty serious store! Not many like that in the USA. I could not read teh names, but the diversity in oscars and peacock bass alone was impressive. So is their pleco collection.

There are only two Astronotus sp. that are valid...they are

Astronotus ocellatus (obviously)
and
Astronotus crassipinnis

What would you suggest as a better source? I can't think of that many fish sites like fishbase....though I know they have made a couple of mistakes. Here is the link.

Anyway...most places I look speak of only two Astronotus sp. [/url]
