Biparental Mouthbrooding in Malawi?

Postby Colby Dixon » Tue Apr 17, 2007 4:45 pm

Did anyone else here watch the Discovery Channel's "Planet Earth" series? The Freshwater episode features some footage from Malawi (Mbuna in HD!) and a male Cichlid mouthbrooding....

Does anyone know what species that was? Discovery's web-site claims it is a male, and that it is the first time this behavior (a male Malawi Cichlid mouthbrooding) has been captured on film....

Sigourne Weaver is the narrator.

Check out Discovery.com for details on the program.

Did some research...yes, in the UK it was Attenborough narrating...they re-dubbed it for the US market

I've asked this question in a lot of different places and to different people and still can't find an answer...(Pam-I'll stop bugging you in that chat room about it now!)

I've decided to try to go to the source and have posted a message on Discoveries website. Hopefully someone will know the answer, or who to contact to get the answer.

My next step will be to go check the credits for the "Malawi Crew" and see if I can locate contacts for any of them.

Seedy,

Wow, way to go, pull me right out into the public eye here!! Just cause I blew you off in the chat room!!! lol

I have this on my Tivo, so I just watched it closely....

The narration for the clip is:

"This Parent isn't eating his young, he is nuturing them."

My guess is a female Tyrannochromis macrostoma

Do I win anything????

:D Oh, but who would've known what "Pam" I was talking about!

Glad you got it on tivo...I'm trying to download the BBC's version of it, as I understand there were script changes when it was americanized...

I want to get a screen capture of the fish to post...

Not that I doubt you (or the other people who think it's actually a female fish). For some reason, I guess I want to believe that Discovery is correct and that they have found a biparental mouthbrooder in Malawi. It would be interesting.

Here is the link where they make the claim...unfortunately it's difficult to navigate the flash to find itl.... you need to follow freshwater, then click the little icon of the angel fish, then click on "sight unseen"...

Normally I would cut and paste a small portion of the text I want to quote...but it looks like the text is laid out in an image...so...here's a screen shot:

Madman: I also just obtained a copy of the original "Planet Earth" without that silly lady from Aliens narating!

The original naration does NOT mention the sex of the fish. I have captured some "frame grabs" of the fish (thank you "redzebra24" from C-F chat) in question.

TO THE ADMIN/Juan Miguel: If I take only a portion of the frame, and post it for educational (we are trying to ID the species) purposes (clearly not for profit)...and distort/obscure most of the scene (except for the fish) would this be "fair use"?

I don't have a problem with it being an aide to ID the fish.

i went through the Ad Konings book and those were the 2 that looked similar but in no cases did i find a male like that
