I'm trying to put together a small paper that involves a few cichlids, among other things. However, the analysis requires a reasonably robust phylogeny, so that sister taxa can be identified.
Despite reading some of the recent papers on Mesoamerican cichlids, I've been unable to really get a handle on the sister group to Herichthys. It seems like Vieja is the correct candidate, but, well, Vieja also seems like something of a mess at the moment. Theraps and Paratheraps are also potential candidates, I think, but according to the latest Catalogue of Fishes/Fishbase.org, they're not even valid genera(despite being used repeatedly in major papers!). Is there a chance any cichlid taxonomy experts could shine some light on this for me?
