snail snack?

Postby fishfaceeyecandy » Wed Sep 15, 2004 5:58 pm

Converting established 55g to cichlid tank. Expecting my first cichlids (chaitika calvus) via mail in a few days. Will remove last of current residents and up the ph just before their arrival. Today noticed very tiny snails in this tank who must have hitched a ride w/some new plants. Q: Will compressiceps eat small snails? Just hoping, it'll help me control the #'s if not eliminate them all together.

I believe they will take care of the snail problem. If not, they are easily crushed (unless they are Malaysian livebearing snails). The calvus will love the treat.

few cichlids eat snails; however there's a very pretty Tanganyikan that DOES eat them:
Neolamprologus tretocephalus.

Now you might hear all kinds of scary stories about this fish misbehaving very badly with a huge overload on nasty characteristics.....

They're ALL TRUE if you have a pair!

A single tret will be an asset (they're like a very colorful baby frontosa; all black white and blue), and will rid you off any snails, and it won't be agressive at all, although it can claim one cave and chase off the occasional intruder.

He's beautiful Sid. What a bright bright blue! I'm doing species tanks right now, 1 species to a tank, but thanks for the suggestion. If I had a cichlid community he'd be in it!
