Ptychochromis grandidieri and oligacanthus spawning

Postby notho2000 » Fri May 27, 2011 1:54 pm

Two Madagascar cichlid species, p. grandidieri and P. oligacanthus are both "in the family way" at the same time in the same tank. The 'grandidieri' have spawned on a small, triangular piece of slate, and the embryos are within a few hours of hatching. The 'oligacanthus' are guarding a very large number of their newly free-swimming fry. This is the first time i've had two different species put down spawns simultaneously. Check the female Paratilapia polleni out. She's either looking for a snack or longingly wishing that some of the babies were hers.

Thank you Piotr. I have really become interested in Madagascar cichlids in the last 2 years and presently have seven species. They are Paretroplus menarambo, P. maculatus*, P. kieneri*, P. petiti, Ptychochromis oligacanthus*, P. grandidieri*, and Paratilapia polleni. The ones marked with a * I have bred and raised young. My goal is to breed and successfully raise all of them.

Nice collection. P. maculatus is indeed a perfect fish :) I'd love to see them live. The only Madagascar species you can find here is Paratilapia small spot. I wish Winnipeg was a few thousands km closer to Poland
