Help with IDs please?

Postby Pifaninha » Mon Mar 28, 2011 6:29 am

Can someone help me with these IDs please? Even if only genus is given, that would be much appreciated. They were all caught in Madagascar.
:)
Thanks!

These are all Paretroplus poliactis. Depending on where collected can have variations in color.

These are all ptychochromis grandidieri. Again color can vary depending on where they are collected. Yours look like the variety in the trade known as "East Coast Gold". In the second pic it is only the fish in the left column that are this fish. The middle looks like a young Paretroplus sp. and the right column all look like Tilapia sp.

These following are all introduce Tilapia species

Sadly the introduced species of cichlids will most likely outcompete the native species helping to drive them to extinction.
$200 is a lot of money for such a plain brown fish. It must be really rare. I'll take 4!!

Hi,

if it can help, some additional IDs :
-the young Paretroplus is also Paretroplus polyactis.
-the last fish shown is not a tilapia, but a native Lutjanidae, probably Lutjanus argentimaculatus.
Best regards, Michael

Hy,
some more names...

in Marcus post:

-the first tow tilapias with the red belly are T. zillii
-the second seems to be a T. zillii X Oreochromis sp. hybrid
-the dark one seems to be O. mossambicus
- an Oreochromis X ??? hybrid
- ????
- all the ones with the striped caudal are most probably O. niloticus
- and the last is a Snaper (Lutjanidae) as said above!

all very nice fish... sad to seem them there though! Jealous of the trip anyway!

How does one hybridize a substrate spawner with a mouthbrooder? Very curious.

I am truly happy to see that there are still some of the native cichlids to be found on my home island.
To see the juvenille paretroplus is indeed a good sign.
Just out of curiosity, where were these fishes collected.
How where they collected, net, etc...
Keep us posted on your collection.

Thanks again, guys!
a2ana: the Paretroplus were pretty much caught in the Rianila River (Brickaville) and in the Canal de Pangalanes, close to Ambila-Lemaitso. Other species were from both the Rianila and the Betsiboka. They were mostly "collected" in fish markets, and some with cast nets and gill nets. But the fish market approach was more successful :p Lots of invasive species there though, including the predator snakehead (Channa maculata), pretty sad...
