Unidentified Lipochromis? Species from Lake Gigati, Uganda

Postby Mark Smith » Mon Nov 16, 2009 8:24 pm

Lawrence Kent has kindly given Cichlidae.com permission to post this image that he took of an interesting cichlid species he recently caught in Lake Gigati, Uganda. This small lake is apparently in close proximity to Lake Nawampasa.

Possible Lipochromis species?? Anyone else have any ideas as to what it might be??

I think Pyxichromis (orthostoma?) more than Lipochromis/Cleptochromis.
Lake Gigati is in Kyoga complex and this fish is very common.

I am getting the impression that several of the "Haplochromis" in Lake Gigati are also found in Lake Nawampasa, and perhaps elsewhere in nearby small bodies of water.

Hi Mark; this fish looks closer to Pyxichromis orthostoma than to a Lipochromis species
xris :)

Good suggestion. I did collect H. squamipinnis from Lakes Edward and George, and they seem to look quite different.

I have see the picture of Erwin , put his squamipinnis doesn't fit really well with the description of the squamipinnis of Greenwood , the life coloration is matching well better with the turquoise of the fish here, the size of the eyes also , the shape of the body too!
But of course, It is only impression, as I haven't see the fish in true!

Nevertheless , really nice specimen 8)

Have you seem the photos of H. squamipinnis here on cichlidae.com yet? Adult male, female and juvenile male depicted. I'll check out Erwin's as soon as I can get onto Fishbase. It seems to be down for the moment.

I agree, very close, if not the same species.
