Haplochromis limax (red chest) females wanted

Postby smanstee » Thu Jul 16, 2009 9:08 am

Hi there I believe I have a male Haplochromis limax (red chest) and need to get some females to go with him, do you have any idea where I can buy them from? I've searched everywhere on the net and all the local fish selling shops and have had no luck.

I was originally incorrectly sold this fish as a female of a different dwarf cichlid a south american variety when it was young and the colours hadn't come out, I've checked on the net and I'm now sure it is a male Haplochromis limax, it is now in a tank on its own after killing all my other fish (community fish) which I was advised would be suitable for it to live with and obviously don't want it to live alone forever, can you please help? I have just bought a bigger tank and am intending on getting a mixture of cichlids to live together there, but want to start with females for the fish I have already, any advice would be really appreciated.

no but I found this picture on http://www.african-cichlid.com/Limax.htm and the very first picture is spot on for my fish, the colouring, the shape of the fish and its fins, the spots on the fins, everything is basically identical, I have tried taking pictures but he's too quick for me and they just come out in a blur and then he hides for ages and everytime he comes out again and I lift the camera up, he ducks into another hiding spot so I just can't get the picture, I hope this helps!

Shape of head is different. Could it be a Rock Krib? Nice fish either way! :)

Thanks it has been suggested to me that it's actually a a male Paralabidochromis sp."rockkribensis" probably Mwanza, so think you may be right, think I'll have to start looking for females of those instead any suggestions as to where I could get them from? I've searched on the net and in loads of different shops and have had no luck so anyone breeding them that can spare a female or two would be greatly appreciated.

finally managed to get a better picture, would be nice if someone could confirm which fish it is for sure so that I can make sure I get the right females for him, any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

I have had these for a few years now, i am sure all of these in the UK originally came from Leiden University and are referred to as Mwanza as a more specific location is unknown. I got mine direct from Holland cichlids.

I generally get a 60-40% yeild in favour of males so finding a spare female may be hard. You may find them on a list from a Czech supplier but you never know what you will get until they arrive. But a very nice and pleasant fish from Lake Victoria - worth the trouble to look.

Good luck

hi
It is a H.sauvagei"rockribensis"perhaps Mwanza location.
try to take contact with some people fom http://www.haplochromis.org,
it's free to register and post on the forum
there are many breeders of these species in France, so who knows, you'll perhaps find someone that can sent or make you come some.
