BMNH Anker and Barel collection

Postby Juan Artigas » Thu Apr 30, 2009 6:07 pm

Thanks to the long term negotiations by Mark Smith, we now have in the Cichlid Room Companion the set of hundreds of slides of freshly collected Lake Victoria cichlids by G. C. Anker and C.N.D. Barel, collected back in 1975 and present in the British Museum of Natural History collection. These slides are a treasure, as they show in color many properly identified species now very rare or believed to be extinct in the wild. I have started today to add them to the Cichlid Room Companion catalog. Thanks Mark!

Thanks Juan! and Dave and Emilio. Am in the Philippines at the moment and could not respond as quickly as I would have liked.

This truly is a great thing, since we can now begin to see what many Lake Victorian cichlids looked like alive by having many of these color slides shown to the world, rather than sitting on a shelf somewhere never to be seen.

More to follow once we can get some sort of name and location attached to each image. A large work in progess.
