difference between female flameback vs Kyoga flameback?

Postby taeniopareius » Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:37 am

Some of my "Kyoga flameback" jumped into "flameback" [Uganda] tank. Males are easy to differentiate but how to separate the two female species?

Hi they are quite unseasy to tell apart, one thing is to look at the mouth form and at the inferior jaw lenght(being a little bit longer in the kyoga one than in the other) the slope of the head is a little bit more rounded in the flameback, the medium longitudinal bar seems to be more linear in the kyoga, mostly yu'll see 3 blotches that form that bar in the flameback. the pelvic fins exhibit a little white color on the first ray of the kyoga that lacks in the flameback. those are very subtles differences and i wish you to success but it's more than uneasy :)

The bottom photo is PROBABLY Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga flameback" the top is likely the Kisumu Xystichromis sp. "flameback" just based on eye size. As Chris stated, they are not easy to tell apart.

Thanks. From your info I put the B fish into the tank with male Kyoga flameback and the B fish get a bit of red on the shoulder
