Haplochromis sp. "purple princess"

It is possible that purple princess is not a true species. If anyone has information on validity of this species please post it. Thanks.

Bob,

I don't have personal experience with this fish but in general I'm always suspicious of "fancy or flashy" names. Often names like this are made up to create a new market for a fish already established in the hobby. Typically legitimate names include the collection location, something about the location, or something about it's place in collecting history like the Maulana bi-color 500 (as I've heard the 500th fish collected by Stuart Grant).

The Tropheus thread on the farm raised/created "Starry Night" is a good example http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4497.

Maybe someone can speak to this sp.

Never heard of it.

I agree with Dan. Be cautious when buying Vics with funky names. Look at them throughly and see if you can ID the fish. If it was online, don't order it. Make sure you see the fish, and make a positive ID first.

I don't think they are always hybrids with names like that, but in a bad way, people are trying to market them. I love Vics, but a fish with the name of Hap. sp. "Red Anal Scraper" probably doesn't appeal to many people. I did see a fish come into a local shop as Hap. sp. "Red fin electric blue", and it wound up being Plty. sp. "Red Tail Sheller", so there is hope.

As to ideas of what it could be, maybe Neochromis. sp. "OB Purple Mahura". They may have described this fish finally, but I'm not sure of the Official scientific name. That would be my best guess.

This was hashed out a few years ago with no consensus as to what it might be.

No, Heiko's Hap sp 83 is Hap sp. "purple yellow".
