Victorians Holding

Postby jcunningham0295 » Sun Jan 29, 2012 8:45 pm

Do Victorians generally hold around three weeks like Malawi? My flamback has been holding for just over a week. Would the fry have hatched by now?

For most (but not all) species, Vic eggs develop quicker than Malawi eggs...maybe around 2 weeks instead of 3. If I'm going to strip already hatched eggs, I pull Malawis after about 2 weeks, Vics (including Flamebacks) after 11 or 12 days (except for the longer holding ones).

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Thanks for the info. At two weeks do Vicorian eggs still need to be tumbled or are they free swimming fry by this time?

When eggs develop heads and tails and can move around a bit, they don't need tumbled any more. When I strip Vics at 10 days and Malawis at 2 weeks, I just put them in a a container of water with airation, and they're fine. The airation might not even be necessary. At 2 weeks, most Vics are almost free swimming, if not all the way free swimming. No need to tumble.

Another easy way is to just put the holding female in a 5-15 gallon tank dependin on how big the female is.

I do this to all my females and after a couple weeks when the fry are strong enough I remove the female and use the tank as a grow out tank until the Juvi stage.

Generally speaking it can take 2-3 weeks for the female to actually spit the fry and let them swim around.

Was just going to post a similar question about my nyererei I have 3 holding females for approx 8 days and wasnt sure if they held as long as malawi mouthbrooders I pulled all 3 today and put them
in a 20g but was planning on splitting them into 3 sep 10 to 15 gallons....can I leave em all together or would it be best to seperate them they all started holding within days of each other the longest being about 8 to 10 days

You might not have any problems putting all 3 together, but I'd be safer to keep them separate. After the fry are out, then you can put them together. A 10g would be big enough for all the fry for a while.
