Aulonocara Maulana/bi-color 500 proper name?

Postby notorioussway » Mon Mar 12, 2012 1:44 pm

I am trying to figure out what is the proper latin name of what is commonly called Aulonocara Maulana or bi-color 500. I have also seen it called Aulonocara stuartgranti "Maulana" but its says its caught in Chitimba so wouldnt the proper name be Aulonocara stuartgranti "Chitimba"? Also its there multiple locations for this variant? is there only one variant that is exported? any info would be appreciated.

The valid scientific name for your fish is Aulonocara stuartgranti "Chitimba Bay shallow". The common name is the Bi-Color 500 and a previous trade name that it was traded under was Aulonocara sp. "maulana". The reason that the proper location is "Chitimba bay shallow" is that a very similar and popular fish in the aquarium hobby is from there, Aulonocara stuartgranti "Chitimba Bay deep", better known under the trade names Aulonocara maisoni or White Tip Maisoni peacock.

Hope That Helps,
Sam
