Electric blue ahli behavior

Postby coolguy1234 » Fri Aug 12, 2011 5:38 pm

I just recently started a new tank after five years of not having one after i moved in to my new place. I had no problem with my old tank which contained two oscars and a large amount of cichlids. my new tank is 75 gallons i have 2 black convicts 8 cichlids and i recently just added 2 male ahlis. They do not do anything except sit in the corner, i was told that they were aggressive fish and they could hold their own against the other cichlids but they seem to just do nothing like theyre scared.Theys sit in a corner and do not chase fish that enter their area
I plan on retruning one of the males and getting one or two females but thts besides the point, why are they acting so weirdly? is it because they are new and they need time to adjust they just dont seem lively at all

They probably need time to adjust to their new home. However, if they're still hiding in the corner after all this time, it's possible the other fish are picking on them. When you add new fish to a tank (especially aggressive ones) you need to change the decor around to make new territories so the new fish have a chance in the tank.

Also, note that the Electric Blue is Sciaenochromis fryeri, not ahli.

Might also be a water parameter issue. Where is the pH/kH in that tank?

These are fish from two different continents with two very different sets of requirements. Maybe check your parameters and move one of the two species out.

Convicts are pretty nasty in my experience and that, coupled with off water parameters could be stressing them out and causing the lethargy you're seeing.

Also, when I kept S. fryeri with other larger haps, they were always the least aggressive.

I hope that helps.

I never considered S. fryeri to be agressive to be honest. When I kept it, it basically minded his own business most of the time (which was sitting in a relatively small corner of the tank), only to show up during feeding time. The male was not stressed or supressed by other fish - they didn't dare take him on :) Ocassionally, he swam a lane or two, immediately to return again to his corner.

However, in the mating season, they can be very dominant, claiming a large territory (an entire 170 gallon tank, in my case) and will chase their tank mates all over the place.

Are they very young or (nearly) adult fish? That makes a difference of course. Also, when you replace one male with one or two females, you will probably see more action ;)
