Tank of mbuna stocking

Postby bob » Wed Jan 18, 2006 6:13 pm

Well, I have one half ton tank of smallish haps, one 5 gal of small red empress fry, one 15 gal community, and a one galleon acrylic 'tank' housing a danio who has been through hell at my hands (long story).

After considerable work and bringing up the subject at the right time, I have succeeded in obtaining permission from dear mother for a three and a half foot long fish tank. One of the provisos for the tank is that it must be stocked with the most colourful mbuna I can get my hands on.

I already decided from the outset that I wanted saulosi in the tank, hongi will probably find their way in too, maybe a foursome of dubuisi, I'd like some estherae too, but I have to consider the size of the tank, and the two other possibilities are rusties and socolofi.

What do you guys reckon, what can go into this tank???

I'm not sure you ought to keep only 4 Tropheus together like that in the tank, but maybe someone with more experience with Tropheus can help you out more on that topic. The estherae may also prove to be a challenge, but if you aquascape properly, that can be minimized. Beyond that, it's a pretty decent choice of fish. The rusties are a good choice as are the saulosi and hongi.

I would like to keep moori or brichardi as opposed to these tropheus, but these fish would have a good male/female ratio, dubuosi are supposed to travel around in pairs or singles in the wild and they are the most peaceful tropheus.

What do you mean by good aquascaping? Just rocks piled high and lots of hiding places?

Thanks for your reply :)

I think in this particular case, lots of hiding places is the same as good aquascaping.

Is there any chance of the hongi being too aggressive to the other fish in a tank this size?
