Satanoperca leucosticta (wild Guyana) ID Confirmation

Postby Colby Dixon » Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:00 pm

Hey folks,

The Cichlidbase project needs your help! While Alex Calder is working on version 3.0 (Blog) we are attempting to positively ID and validate suspected ID's of many of our Cichlid photographs. Juan has graciously agreed to let us use this Forum's Expertise in verifying our photos. Any and all help is appreciated. All photos by Alex Calder.

Thank You,
Colby Dixon and the entire Cichlidbase team.

This fish was originally labeled as Satanoperca jurupari (wild Guyana). However, after some discussion it was decided that it was mis-ID'd and is actually a wild caught Satanoperca leucosticta from Guyana. Any thoughts on this one?

S. leucosticta ID is correct in my opinion. It has facial markings (thus not jurupari) and doesnt really look like other Satanoperca species.

Hi Colby,

I agree, it very much appears to be the "classic" S. leucosticta from Guyana, also exported from Colombia from time to time. However, I think making a distinction between leucosticta and jurupari based on facial markings is, proverbially, some very thin ice. After having worked with a bunch of "leucosticta" and "jurupari" types from a number of different localities, the line between them gets a bit blurry when looking at facial patterns in conjuction with reproductive modality.

Best of luck with the project.
