What kind of pike is this?

Postby ilovemkglamor » Sun Jan 11, 2009 8:50 pm

I bought this fish at my LFS. It was labled as an "African Pike Cichlid," but I havent been able to ID it as one species over another. As can be seen in the photos, it has a rosey/orange colored patch on each side. It also has an eye spot in the middle of the top fin and another one on the tail fin, but the eye spots doent seem to have a ring around them at all. It is about 4" long, so it may be a juvenile....unless it is a dwarf species. Does anyone have any ideas on what I may have here? Thanks!

That girl is most likely a Crenicichla sp. "Belly Crawler" - they are great fun to watch, they "hop" around the tank continually once settled and are quite fearless.

Does look like a female Crenicichla sp. "Belly crawler", not African! They come from Colombia S.A.. Ken

Thanks guys. I saw pics of this species, but all the pics must have been of males b/c they didn't have the rosey/organge coloring on the sides. I can't wait for her to get adjusted to the tank.
Now, I assume this species has similar eating habits as the african species...Like, freeze dried, frozen, or live fish/worms as their primary source of food. Do they ever eat vegies/algae?

nothing african about that girl, she is SA all the way, I have never had one that wouldn't take prepared foods.
