Crenicichla sp Venezuela?? Pls help cfm ID

Postby elindra » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:45 pm

I bought this as a juvie sometime back as a Vennie.
However, it doesn't look like any Vennie I've seen before. Anyone can help me confirm the ID?
Thanks!

Basically it's very pink and somewhat yellow

As Hugo Chaves thinks exporting oil should suffice for the Venezuelan economy, not much fishes are coming from Venezuela inte the hobby. Thus I wonder whether many people know anything about fishes from this country.

This might imply your fish might not come from this country - but you yourself know the reliabilityh of your sources the best. I'm not saying your fish is not from Venezuela, but IDing might be hard

To be honest this was bought from a shop which I don't frequent often and they are better with other exotics than Crenicichla.

However, this was bought at a really great price because no one wanted it and it had been in his shop for a long time.

I'm just curious what it is because those Vennies commonly seen in the market is really dull looking.

I really appreciate yr reply.

They could have been here awhile so they could be from Venezulea, but probably not. We used to get some like that out of Brazil, but until the other night I have not seen any in awhile. I was checking out a LFS that I have a long friendship with the owner and found what looks to be a pair. He wasn't there or I'd have them for half of the price on the tank. I'll have to go back Monday. We always called them red pikes, and back when we used to get those you couldn't always rely on the name on the invoice, it probably just said red pike anyway.

I got it for about USD 20. Which is cheap.

I hv seen similar pikes like it in the past which hv been passed off as Atabapo I.

Anyway, I wonder why they are called red pikes when they are cotton candy pink.

"So basically it's likely a Lugubris and everything else unknown :/" Not so fast.

I know this is an old thread, but I would like to point out that fish are indeed exported from Venezuela. As far as I am aware, the main restrictions center around species that are considered "food fish". This may have changed recently though.

There is a large aquarium store in NJ that regularly imports from Venezuela. And....there is also a member of the C.lugubris group reported to come from Venezuela.

Could it be this fish?
