Geophagus ID

Postby qbsztyk1 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 3:24 am

Hi.
I have a pair of these Geo (pictures below), bought as G. sp. Rio Negro, but as you know, both of them (I and II) already described. The male is about 13 cm and the female is 11cm. There was a spawning few times. I suspect it might be G. dicrozoster, but I'm not sure. Please help.

Look more like G. winemilleri, the best is to have the melanic pattern, you may have 4 bars slightly sloped if i am right

a = G. dicrozoster
c = G. winemilleri

+1 on G. winemilleri. Besides the info Florent provided, if you look at the catalogue for this site, it also is listed as Geophagus sp "Rio Negro"

I know, I know ;), G. winemilleri before it was described was the name Geophagus sp. "Rio Negro I" (1) and Geophagus sp Stripetail. While G. dicrozoster was previously called - Geophagus sp. "Rio Negro II" (2) - if I'm correct ;). But for me, both seem to be similar (to my Geo's). I want to make sure which one I have. I have to do them pictures when the lateral stripes will be more visible.
For now, thanks guys :)

I think you can quite safely say that your fish are winemilleri – the lateral bars can already be counted from these pictures and there clearly are four of them. So as far as I can see, no way that they are dicrozoster – or anything else really to that matter.

Hello again.
Watch the video below, the lateral stripes are now more visible, I think. I also thought that maybe they are too young (too small) to spawn, if they are G. winemilleri (male 13cm, female 11cm)? Maybe I'm wrong, and size does not matter here?.
Pay attention to the strange place that they chose to spawn, I was very surprised when I saw it :)

Wow, that is quite something. :mrgreen: I have a group of five G. winemilleri that I got a year ago, and two of them formed a pair last autumn well before they were 15 cm. They also spawned once, so I suppose it's quite normal for them to start breeding at that size – whether they will be successful at first is then of course a different matter. At least mine looked like they were just practising, and the eggs disappeared pretty quickly too.

But yeah, definitely winemilleri.
