Festae..different species or differnt locations?

Postby terrors r us » Thu Dec 01, 2011 3:01 am

Hello to all....I am raising some festae from Equador and some from Peru...
(I don't have any Columbian type)....I realize that the rivers intersect in these countries...
so my question is....is this the same fish?(don't matter what country it's from because rivers don't have boundaries?).....
I was led to believe that Equdorians have a more golden color, Peruvians more red and Colombians more green.......does anyone know if there is any truth to this??
Between a friend of mine and myself we have festae from...Rapps, Dan(Equador),
Dan(Peru), and florida tropicals which say theirs comes from a F0 Equadorian & domestic pair.
They are growing out and display from time to time but too early to see a difference...
the largest are the Equadorians from Dan.....they are the most amazing Festae ever!!!!!
Can't wait to see the rest grow out but IMO the Equadorians are going to be hard to beat....
Any opinions would be great......also how about the blue female as compared to the balck ones??
Thanks

I don't believe there is such a thing as a Columbian Festae.

As with the others, all fish are extremely variable so fish from the same brood could have different coloration and if I read your post correctly you have some fish created from a domestic and wild strain. It will be impossible to know what those fish will look like. Once you "cross" locations or populations even of the the same species all bets are off as to what you'll get in the resulting brood(s).

In my experience the Ecuadorian Festae I raised had bright red females with black bars while the males sported bright red, green (some), and black all over their entire bodies. The strain I had was incredibly colored.

As for sources of fish, if the exact provenience is not known they are not a "known" representative of that species. Especially with species that are easily (willingly) crossed in a hobby full of hobbyists that don't pay attention to things like collection sites, source rivers, and country of origin. There are two distinctly separate groups, purists and non-purists where purists take painstaking care in ensuring their fish are kept separated by collection location (country, river, spot (or city etc)) while the other group is keen on other factors.
