Mesonauta ID

Postby dm.67 » Sat Aug 04, 2012 7:20 am

I know they are nothing exciting but I just wanted an ID on these please. They are wild caught but the shop I bought them from couldn't remember if they were from Colombia or Peru.

The photos show 2 different fish. The left and right side of each. I've just labelled them fish A and B. Thanks.

Look like M. mirificus from Peru. Few species have orange coloration like that, in my mind only M. mirificus and M. insignis. The last one have a reticulated pattern above oblique line.

Your Mesonauta look very much like my 'insignis'. Here's a pic of mine for comparison.

On the other hand, according to @Florent, maybe I have 'mirificus' instead of 'insignis'.. I obtained my 'insignis?' from what I believed to be a reliable source. I'll look into it further. Mine certainly look more like 'mirificus' than 'insignis'. And @dm.67, yours do look like 'mirificus' based upon pics on the internet.

Thanks guys. I knew they weren't any of the types with the reticulated pattern across the back, but I wasn't sure which of the others they were and I wanted a more experienced eye than my own to ID them.
