Extravaganza 2017 Update

Post by LewC » Tue Jun 06, 2017 9:52 am

There has been a change in our plans for the 2017 OCA Extravaganza.

We are sad to announce that Luiz Tencatt, who was very excited to be coming to our event, had to cancel. It seems that, because the closest consulate is over 600 miles from where he lives (Brazil is a big country), and the process would require a stay of several days, the logistics of getting a US visa for his passport would be impossible to work out, as he will continue to be deep into finishing his PhD studies over the next few months. We are hoping that he can get all that worked out over time, and come visit us within the next couple years.

On the other hand, we are happy to announce that we have booked another young catfish specialist to appear at this year’s Extravaganza! His name is Daniel Konn-Vetterlein. Daniel is not well known in the US, but is becoming a regular at the big catfish events in Europe, mainly in Germany, Austria and the UK. He is currently preparing to begin his PhD studies at the University of Kiel, in northern Germany. He is also studying Spanish, serving as an assistant to a field biologist studying German wildlife, and teaching classes in fish morphology, environmental science, and other branches of the biological sciences.

Current plans call for Daniel to give a talk about the catfish of Bolivia and Brazil, complementing Wolfgang Staeck’s survey of cichlids from the same region. He will also give a presentation on rarely seen catfishes from all over South America.

Wolfgang will also give a talk on Apistogramma, and Ad Konings’ topic this year will be cichlids of the Congo Shore of Lake Tanganyika. Anton Lamboj will round out the slate of topics with his presentation about West African cichlids, “Pelvicachromis and Related Genera”.

The registration store on the OCA website is open, and the Strongsville Holiday Inn is taking reservations for our event. Rooms are only $70 a night, and can be reserved by calling (440)238-8800. Make sure to ask to speak to the on-site reservations person, as the Holiday Inn’s central reservations office may not be able to offer the special rate. The sooner you make your hotel reservations, the better, as more reservations early means more rooms made available to us later, and we don’t want you to be disappointed if our blocks sell out before you book.
