The new group will not go intot the 4 meters tank, they will, ultimately, have to settle for a 290 cm one

After all, I will have to keep the 2 groups separated

Any particular reason for that? Size difference and aggression, or you think they are from different region thus, you don't want them to cross?

it would be too much of a coincidence if they were to come from the very same location. Thus I will not want them to cross - at least untill I know much more about them

Besides the old group maxes at 20 cm, while the new group will measusre '1 - 1.5 inch', but the size will not be the real problem, as the old group has 2 at 4 - 5 cm, and they don't bother them

Some more development. All 5 start shining, especially when the sun light hits the tank...

New pictures. Slow growing, considering max size. I keep them in the water on cooler temp range and try to feed a little as possible, so they wont become usual captivity fat belly/high body monsters 8).

Nice shots Alex! Lovely fish!

Could you post that "high-bodied, fat bellied monsters" quip on some of the other forums please? We DEFINITELY need to see less of those! :D

Anthony, Chris thanks!
Really beautiful interesting fish, not common here (East Coast) at all. I belongs to 2 fish clubs and as far I know no other members keep A.Rostratus.
I only saw once, when Rapps selling them at the end of 2008 and I grub 5 of them.
Hardy fish IMO, I don't do nothing special for them and they seems happy. Can't say the same about their tankmates - T.Helleri... unfortunately.
As for the feeding is not surprising that so many fish in the hobby overfed and fat. Myself, not once, I happen to be in situation when I intentionally were trying to give my other fishes really small amount of food, but faster, more active fishes ate allot anyway, while slow / finicky eaters were almost starving... So here we go, got to be sure what species are compatible, but even then some of them vary.

Alex, do you know if yours are the lacustrine or riverine form? I've had both, and they look quite different (though equally beautiful in their own way).

Hi Chris, were the pictures man? :) When I read your post first time I see the pictures but I was busy at work to respond.
Some of them at the beginning of the thread, but I saw new ones, I like to see it. Please post again if you can.
Anyways, as for my Rostratus I dunno the location and where they come from, but now after you asked, I think I have some pointers who to ask. 8)
In my eyes they more slender (riverline i guess?) type compare to yours and other folks pictures. But again may be they'll bulk up more when continue to mature.
They probably 1.5 y old, I have them from around an inch for way over the year, but they doesn't seems to get their maturity yet, like we would think many other med sized cichlids would do. I think I have male around 4.5" TL and 4 females slightly smaller, they all have 0 interest to each other. May be 72F water temp and light feeding contribute to prolonged maturity cycle.
What was grow rates for your Rostratus Chris? Which was larger riverline or lacustrine?

Just spoke with person I got them from.
They are as I suspected e.g riverine type.
