There is a problem with your cichlid Derek. Herichthys bartoni does not have the red/purple scaleless area behind the pectoral fins, Herichthys steindachneri does not have any red on the fins and body. Unfortunately, Herichthys pantostictus is not prognathous. So you have a new species! :-) Probably result of hybridization? The pictures don't show much about your fish unfortunately.

I would diagnose it as Herichthys pantostictus except that this species is nor prognathous. as I said before this group of cichlids are very close and may hybridize if allowed. So at least you have a cichlid that is mostly Herichthys pantostictus :-). It is always hard to say with captive fish. As their origins unfortunately in some cases are not to trust.

I don't know, as I said, I have never seen a prognathous Herichthys pantosticus as far as I remember, but could it be a viable mutation? Fish with no origin or from a source that can not be verified as trustable can not be trusted....
