Schieser Joseph Nelson (April 12, 1937 - August 9, 2011) was a Canadian zoologist. He was Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He was also Chair of the Joint ASIH-AFS Committee on Names of Fishes

Nelson was honored with the 2000 Distinguished Service Award of the American Fisheries Society, he received the 2002 Robert H. Gibbs Jr. Memorial Award for his work in the systematics of Ichthyology , 2003, J. Dewey Soper Award from the Alberta Society of biologists. In 2006, he was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal.

Joseph Nelson is the author of Fishes of the World, the fourth edition published in 2006 by John Wiley & Sons.
