Archer Fish are not members of the family cichlidae, but rather members of the family Toxotidae.

Perches, but not cichlids

Cichlidis are perces, with 2 characteristics an aquarist can see:

firstly, they have only 1 nasal opening, other perches have 2
secondly, the lateral line is divided into two parts, the frontal one bending up, the second remainng where it was: on the middle.

Perhaps closely related families of perches show these characteristics too, but these only life in sea

as far as I'm aware (and I maybe wrong) the only other freshwater fish that has a broken lateral line. with the exception of the congo tetra Phenacogrammus interruptus, and the name originated from the fact of this broken lateral line.

though quite a few of the archers are brackish, so might not be considered freshwater as a result.
