In all honesty, I think your bigger tank ought to be at least twice its size to contain what you have in it - and now I'm in fact far too conservative

The same goes for your smaller tank - unless your fishes are less than half an inch

Hello, and welcome! You have chosen the right place to learn about your fish. There are many extreemly knowledgable hobbyists here and there is never a lack of information.

I would have to agree with Bas Pels your tanks seem to be too small for everything you have in them. I would consider upsizing your tanks or perhaps adding a couple more and splitting up the fish.

thanks for the replies :D not intending to keep all my fish for too long - once i have a Herichthys pair, i'm selling everthing in the 4' tank - minus my Nics pair and maybe the Salvini (if they pair) - together with the Herichthys pair (plus a spare female maybe??). i will also sell everthing else in the small tank and keep it for my Bristlenosed plecs

my ideal Herichthys pair would be a Labridens - but finding it very difficult to source (and finance)

at the moment i'm just learning about different species (hands-on)

will be asking loads of questions as time goes on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so please help as much as you can 8)
