I have a 55 gallon tank, has been up and running for 1 and 1/2 years. I have cichlids. I haven't had any problems until about 2 weeks ago. My water has started looking cloudy. I used Tetra water clarifier and changed the water 2 times in the past week and 1/2. Nitrates were high and I put in a nitrate filter bag.

Now my empress has scales that look like they are sticking out from her body. I don't see any spots or anything else abnormal. Can anyone tell me what this might be and how to treat it?

Ammonia is 0.

Also I have had to buy new lights and I got some that say they are like natural sunlight and that's when the cloudy look appeared. Could the lighting be causing this effect?
