Stocking confirmation

Postby shon982 » Sun Nov 21, 2010 1:00 am

Copied from another forum I posted in but I would like more suggestions:
My main aim is to keep and breed the less common Tanganyikan cichlids but also keep as many species as possible :)
Anyone got better ideas or suggestions?
I'm not really after any common tangs like leleupi, multies etc.

4ft x 2.5ft x 2ft - 11 Tropheus Bemba Orange, 1 Spathodus Erythrodon, 2 Callichromis pleurospilus
I've got the bembas and the spathodus at the moment in this tank which are doing perfectly fine!
Just curious on the addition of the pleuros? Would have to be a male and a female - This is all that is available to me

7ft x 20" x 2ft - 10 Tropheus Ikola
I have this tank already stocked with 10 Ikola - 2 males and 8 females so I'm thinking add more

Then I have a small breeding setup on a tiered rack
At the moment here is my stocking ideas
I've said the 2ft ones are 1ft high but thats the level of the water most likely since it is where the drain hole is drilled

2x18x1 - Lamprologus meleagris or speciosus

2x18x1 - Telmatochromis Vitattus

2x18x1 - Julidochromis transcriptus Gombe and/or Telmatochromis temporalis M'toto shell

Any other Shelldwellers or small Tanganyikans that would suit those sized tanks?

3x18x20 - No idea at all I want something for the bottom and the middle/top

3x18x20 - Xenotilapia Ochrogenys
I'm thinking the tank is alright for maybe 3-6 Ochrogenys but I want something for the middle/top

Like I said before, I'm not after keeping any common Tanganyikan cichlids
Also, choices are VERY VERY limited in Australia

Lastly
2x18x18 - A pair of Triglachromis Otostigma
This I've got at the moment, just waiting on them to breed. they're pretty happy in the tank
I could move these guys into a 3ft tank but I would want suggestions on a fish to fill up more of the tank

Thanks, Shon

I strongly advise against keeping Callochromis together with Tropheus and Spathodus.
Comparable nutritional requirements should be a major aspect assembling the tankmates of an aquarium.
You can either fulfill the nutritional requirements of the Tropheus / Spathodus, or the Callochromis.
Fulfilling those of the Tropheus / Spathodus won't meet those of the Callochromis. But fulfilling those of Callochromis, will kill your Tropheus!
Finding a partner for your Spathodus would be a more suitable solution.
No harm meant! Just trying to avoid tragedy.

Thank you for the reply Gerd :) I appreciate it

Yes I have done some research and have come to the some conclusion has you have
It would be better off as well because I believe Tropheus breed better if they're the only dominant fish in the tank

Update:

4ft x 2.5ft x 2ft - 11 Tropheus Bemba Orange, 1 Spathodus Erythrodon
Aim is to add more tropheus. It would be near impossible to find another Spathodus (Red line Kigoma) in Australia.

7ft x 20" x 2ft - 10 Tropheus Ikola
More Ikola

2x18x1 - Lamprologus meleagris or speciosus
2x18x1 - Telmatochromis Vitattus
2x18x1 - Julidochromis transcriptus Gombe and/or Telmatochromis temporalis M'toto shell
However stocking for these can always change. Any suggestions for something rarer/unique?

3x18x20 - A pair of Triglachromis Otostigma
Maybe add more later, any suggestions for tank mates?
Or else the pair can go into the 2x18x1 (I keep them in a 2x18x18 and they're doing great so I don't see any harm) and go for something else?

3x18x20 - Xenotilapia Ochrogenys
3-6 Ochrogenys and suggestions for tank mates?
